IIT-Ropar teams up with Australian varsity

Indian and Australian Institutes will join hands to undertake joint research projects in solar energy. Four students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, will join engineering students at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia.

The University is working on developing next generation solar thermal energy systems that convert heat from sunlight into electricity. A four-day workshop in mid-April on solar energy will see interactions and efforts to firm up research partnerships.

The projects to be discussed would revolve around optimised solar powered cooling systems, solar receivers that can withstand extremely high temperatures, and the design of thermal batteries that could be used as an additional energy source for electric vehicles, according to Dr. Rob Taylor, a mechanical engineer. Other projects will explore ways that solar energy can be harnessed to more efficiently turn biomass into readily usable fuels and to reduce environmental impact of water desalination.

“There are many states in India, especially along the coastline, which experience a shortage of pure water,” says Dr. Himanshu Tyagi, research supervisor from IIT-Ropar. “Solar-powered water desalination, if implemented on a large scale, can provide a solution to this problem.” And solar energy can also be used to provide power to the masses, he said in a release.

The Australian University will sponsor and host the four engineering students from India. Australia and India have a lot in common when it comes to solar energy: both have an abundance of sunshine, and neither is taking full advantage of this renewable resource, says Dr. Taylor.
